Worthing families gather at Splashpoint to back child hunger campaign

Relatives came together to demonstrate their backing for a movement demanding an end to food insecurity among young people.

The gathering occurred in Worthing, on the grassland adjacent to Splashpoint Leisure Centre, on Saturday morning, in alliance with the broader Mother’s Manifesto collaboration.

The non-violent assembly was set up by Lauren, a Worthing-based mother who collaborates with the Children’s Food Campaign, uniting families to highlight the issue. She brought her young son to the event and encouraged local residents to participate.

Lauren explained that the occasion simply gave people the chance to unite and express their support for families finding it difficult to afford meals.

Participants began arriving from 10am, carrying picnic rugs, soft toys and bare plates as representations of youngsters missing out on sustenance. The assembly mirrored a larger protest at Westminster, where mothers from throughout the nation demanded immediate measures.

The Worthing gathering sought to draw attention to youth poverty and food scarcity, both domestically and worldwide. Campaigners maintain that approximately three out of ten children in Britain are currently experiencing deprivation.

The Mother’s Manifesto initiative, established by Emma Hopkins, brings together mothers and allies who are pushing for measures guaranteeing that every youngster can obtain nutritious meals and that households are shielded from financial hardship.

Lauren expressed that knowing numerous parents must go without food themselves solely to ensure their offspring have something to eat was deeply distressing.

She added that the intention was to demonstrate that individuals locally understood this situation and endorsed the push for transformation.

According to the movement, roughly seven million British households cannot afford basic necessities. Single-parent homes, families from ethnic minority backgrounds and those containing a disabled relative are among the worst impacted.

The initiative centres on the Pink Paper, a policy document detailing the structural shortcomings that result in food insecurity and difficulty, alongside proposals for improvement.

The mood in Worthing was oriented around families, with adults conversing while youngsters played in the vicinity.

Those behind the event hope that modest assemblies such as this one will help spread the initiative’s aims and prompt increased efforts to eradicate child hunger.
