£558k funding approved for Lewes-Hamsey bridge over River Ouse

Plans for a new footbridge and cycleway connecting two local communities have moved a stage nearer to reality.

The structure would cross the River Ouse, linking Lewes with Hamsey.

Lewes District Council’s cabinet has given initial approval for £558,000 from Community Infrastructure Levy resources, though this remains conditional on securing planning consent.

The funding depends on equivalent contributions from the South Downs National Park Authority and Wealden District Council.

The scheme would form part of an environmentally-friendly transport network and provide additional entry points to the South Downs National Park.

As well as the bridge allocation, over £386,000 in CIL funds has been green-lit for broader infrastructure enhancements throughout the district.

These encompass improvements to pedestrian and cycling paths, bus facilities, crossing installations, bus stop locations, and footpath upgrades in villages including Kingston and Rodmell.

Further schemes involve operational improvements at Newhaven Port Facility and necessary renovation works at Lewes Fire Station.

Cabinet member for planning and infrastructure Cllr Laurence O’Connor commented that the schemes would deliver tangible benefits to residents’ daily lives, strengthening community connections and public safety standards, and he was pleased to be authorising such worthwhile enhancements for the Lewes district.
