Worthing Integrated Care Centre clears legionella test but opening still months away

A much-anticipated modern healthcare facility may be nearer to becoming operational after testing showed the location no longer contains dangerous bacteria.

Worthing Borough Council has confirmed that the Worthing Integrated Care Centre no longer has legionella contamination.

The bacteria, which poses known health risks, was among the primary factors slowing the centre’s opening.

Yet the council cautioned that construction at the premises continues to ensure it meets requirements, is safe and can function fully.

The facility’s water network will stay under the management of Galliford Try, the principal construction firm, until all necessary work is finished, independently examined and officially approved.

The company maintains contractual obligations for the WICC’s design, building and regulatory compliance, having resumed control of the water system in August 2025 to address these problems.

The venue, situated on Stoke Abbott Road, was originally slated to open in 2024 but encountered numerous obstacles stemming from legionella in the water supply and a defect in the water system.

It will serve as Sussex’s inaugural facility of its kind, consolidating various NHS services in a single location and enhancing accessibility.

Once functioning, the site will deliver general practice, mental health, community and dental care, alongside a chemist and services for families and young children.

The council acknowledged last year that it was exploring the option of seeking financial redress to decrease the long-term expenses of the centre, after postponements resulted in £45 million in costs.

Complications with the structure prevented the NHS from occupying it, leaving the council responsible for covering its operational expenses.

WBC stated it found the headway encouraging and would keep stakeholders informed as efforts proceed.
