Worthing mum and daughter swap flat for £2m home on Rich House, Poor House

A mother raising her child alone and getting by on £90 weekly exchanged residences with a wealthy businesswoman.

Lyndsay and her daughter Katie occupy a downstairs apartment in Worthing, while they spent time in a £2 million property in Crowborough for Channel 5’s Rich House, Poor House programme.

The programme, broadcast on Saturday March 21, featured the pair exchanging living arrangements with businesswoman Rachel Watkyn and her husband Steve.

During their stay in the mansion complete with a 13-metre swimming pool and 1.2-acre garden, they were given £2,000 to manage.

When shown the cash, Lyndsay was overcome with emotion and remarked that it was an enormous sum she had never encountered before.

Lyndsay previously operated a childcare business but ceased working following a hysterectomy operation. She also experiences arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Her daughter, who is 21, developed an uncommon and serious condition affecting her pancreas. She required an operation to remove her pancreas, gallbladder, spleen and a quarter of her stomach.

Lyndsay described waiting 14 hours in a hospital corridor while her daughter underwent removal of three organs as the most difficult experience a parent could face, noting she feared at any moment someone might inform her that her child had not survived.

Katie, who dreams of becoming an aircraft pilot, mentioned she experiences frequent discomfort.

Wealthy businesswoman Rachel, founder of the recycled packaging firm Tiny Box Company, has also faced significant health obstacles, having been diagnosed with cancer on four separate occasions.

She and her husband stayed in the Worthing flat alongside his 12-year-old granddaughter Amelia.

Upon receiving their allowance of £91.38, the family were astonished.

Rachel observed that discovering an income of £91.38 for two people makes one appreciate how fortunate they have been not to have financial concerns alongside health difficulties.

Following learning about Lyndsay and Katie’s medical and self-esteem challenges, Rachel and Steve organised a professional photography session for them at a private studio in Brighton.

They also arranged five flying lessons for Katie and proposed investing £10,000 to help Lyndsay establish a childcare agency.

Rachel expressed that their goal was simply to help them regain their lives and move forward.
