New scheme aims to safeguard Sussex’s endangered wildlife haven

A initiative has been unveiled to restore an uncommon and precious natural environment.

A study released by Natural England revealed environmental pressures affecting the Adur Estuary, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest that contains vulnerable coastal saltmarsh and tidal mudflats.

Following the publication, the conservation charity Friends of Adur SSSI is overseeing execution of a fresh strategy to support restoration efforts.

According to Samantha Smithson of Friends of Adur SSSI, the local community benefits from having a nature reserve nearby that provides easy access to wildlife experiences. She noted that visitors should be encouraged to remain on official footpaths, which would allow the saltmarsh to regenerate and provide wading birds with adequate space for feeding and resting.

The assessment points to the site’s continued unsatisfactory state, with SSSI status granted in 1987.

Reduction of tidal habitats through coastal squeeze, degraded water quality, non-native species and recreational pressure are cited as primary concerns.

The updated guidance calls for public education initiatives to minimise interference and enable the ecosystem to recuperate.

Tony Benton, Chairman of Shoreham District Ornithological Society, expressed support for the management strategy, stating that the suggestions for enhancing the SSSI’s condition are practical and achievable. He added that the site offers an exceptional opportunity for urban residents to engage with the natural world and that his organisation looks forward to assisting the Friends Group with their activities.

The Adur Estuary saltmarsh represents the sole surviving example of this habitat type between Rye Harbour and Pagham Harbour, offering feeding and resting areas for waders including redshank, dunlin and ringed plover.

This scarce habitat occurs at limited locations throughout Sussex, predominantly at the harbours of Rye, Chichester and Pagham and along the tidal sections of the Rivers Rother, Cuckmere and Adur, according to the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
