A secondary school has expressed profound regret after a teacher was permanently prohibited from the profession following repeated professions of affection toward a student.
Benjamin Phelps, aged 31, received an indefinite teaching ban after a misconduct panel determined he had engaged in serious professional breaches through his involvement with a pupil at St Bede’s School in Upper Dicker, near Hailsham.
At the relevant time, he held positions as assistant boarding housemaster, classroom teacher and technical support staff for performing arts within the secondary section catering to students between 13 and 18 years old.
During the period of their association, Mr Phelps sent the student unsuitable messages, arranged meetings beyond school hours, embraced and kissed the young person on the cheek, and proposed they absent themselves from classes to share a meal together in his vehicle.
Once the Teaching Regulation Agency released its conclusions, the St Bede’s School Trust published an official response.
A spokesperson for the trust explained that upon learning of potential violations by Mr Phelps of staff conduct requirements and child protection protocols concerning claims of an unsuitable association, the institution promptly implemented measures consistent with its safeguarding procedures.
Mr Phelps faced immediate suspension and, following an extensive inquiry, was subsequently terminated from his position. The matter was escalated to law enforcement authorities but did not meet the threshold for criminal proceedings.
Throughout the probe, St Bede’s ensured full cooperation with the Local Authority Designated Officer to guarantee a comprehensive and open process and to confirm that all necessary actions were undertaken, according to the trust.
A trust representative indicated deep sorrow over the upset this matter has caused. The representative added that the welfare and security of students represent the school’s foremost concern, and they join their community in expressing serious concern regarding this individual’s conduct that fails to uphold the elevated professional standards they cherish.
In response to the situation, the trust arranged for an external assessment of safeguarding procedures.
The examination concluded that the institution’s guidelines, protocols and operations are sound and that no predictable hazards or regulatory failures existed within the school’s frameworks that played a role in this matter.
The school trust has affirmed its commitment to preserving a strong child protection environment and persists in examining internal procedures to guarantee the continued safety and welfare of all young people in its care.
