Town centre venue shuts after 13 years of trading

A restaurant in the centre of Brighton has shut its doors for good after more than a decade of trading.

The MEATliquor outlet on York Place ceased operations on March 27, bringing an end to 13 years of service in the city.

Signs posted in the establishment’s window announced the permanent closure. One notice stated the venue had operated for 13 years and thanked the city for its support, noting customers could still visit the chain’s London locations. Another notice appeared two weeks earlier indicating food service would cease, with an apology for any disruption caused.

The decision to stop preparing meals on March 15 followed changes to the venue’s operating schedule. A previous notice had informed customers that the restaurant would no longer open on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays.

The burger-focused venue built its reputation on generous meat patties, spicy cheese-loaded fries, and cocktails blended into milkshake form.

The company first established itself in Brighton in 2013, promoting what it described as an energetic atmosphere combining street art with bold sauces. The chain attracted customers with its straightforward approach and its popular Dead Hippie burger, featuring two mustard-fried beef patties beneath layers of melted cheese.

The business grew from a fringe pop-up operation and specialised in American-style comfort cuisine served in vibrant environments. Many of its sites featured dimly lit, graffiti-covered interiors with rock music playing late into the evening.

The company maintains several outlets across London. A MEATliquor restaurant in Leeds shut down permanently several months ago.
