Historic 15th-century structure set for extensive renovation

A historic structure dating back to the 1400s is set to receive £260,000 in conservation work.

The Grade-II protected property known as Ancient Priors, situated on the main shopping street in Crawley, will see improvements begin mid-April with an anticipated five-month timeframe.

Crawley Borough Council leader Councillor Michael Jones announced the initiative during Wednesday’s session on March 25.

The councillor indicated this reflected the authority’s continued dedication to safeguarding and developing the town’s heritage quarter.

He explained that the schedule accounts for the requirements of traditional building materials, specifically lime-based mortar, which demands appropriate warmer conditions typical of spring.

The project encompasses revival of the property’s significant historical elements. Specialist contractors will address the medieval oak framework, Horsham stone covering, and conventional lath and plaster partitions, employing proper preservation methods throughout.

Ancient Priors originated approximately in 1450 during Henry VI’s reign while Jack Cade led unrest across Sussex and Kent against fiscal burdens resulting from the 100 Years War.

The municipal authority purchased the medieval structure in 2016, deriving rental revenue from Ask Restaurants until COVID-19 forced closure of the outlet.

Previously recognised as the finest timber-framed house between London and Brighton, the property served as a private residence before changing hands multiple times and transforming into the Whyte Harte Inn during the 1600s.

Following construction of the present White Hart Inn further along the High Street in 1770, Ancient Priors functioned as a furniture emporium and subsequently accommodated dining establishments. Among these were premises operated by local boxing champion Alan Minter under the Minters name.

Councillor Jones indicated that the property holds special significance for established community members who would welcome confirmation that its preservation has been secured for coming generations, and he anticipates viewing the restored exterior once operations conclude.
