Sussex Village Earns Coveted Best Place to Live Honor

Nestled close to Haywards Heath, the picturesque settlement of Lindfield has earned recognition as one of Britain’s most sought-after places to make a home.

With over forty half-timbered residences dating from the medieval and early modern eras, the village drew the interest of compilers of the Sunday Times’ Best Places to Live Guide, who praised its historic houses and captivating duck pond.

The village claimed the crown for best location in the South East, evaluated on visual charm, academic establishments, shopping opportunities, transportation connections, and amenities important to homebuyers seeking practicality.

St Leonards and Petworth also featured among the top ten for the South East region.

The publication’s assessors noted the village appeals to those with an idealistic temperament, providing magic through its duck pond, impressive heritage homes, welcoming residents, and the West Sussex countryside.

The local main street adequately serves inhabitants while preserving its distinctive feel, but the Lindfield Coffee Works commands attention as a busy roastery and café attracting visitors of all generations. As night falls, regulars convene at the Stand Up Inn to enjoy toad-in-the-hole, a traditional coin-flipping diversion originating from Sussex.

The village’s pond, supplied by natural springs, supports fish, waterfowl, swans at certain times of year, and occasionally grey herons. King Edward Hall frequently hosts displays and diverse community gatherings.

Visit South East England indicates roughly six thousand people reside in the village, which contains the four classic components commonly seen in an attractive Sussex settlement: a heritage church, a quaint High Street, a tranquil pond populated by birds, and spacious common land.

All Saints Church, the historical place of worship, dates back to the eleventh century. Beside the church stands Church House, known locally as The Tiger, representing the village’s most ancient structure. This edifice formerly operated as an inn offering lodging and sustenance to tired voyagers.

Lindfield’s name signifies open land with lime trees, and the historic main street indeed boasts rows of linden trees bordering its course.
