Three Sussex school communities could soon benefit from improved walking and cycling routes.
Safer crossings, widened footpaths, and new bollards have been proposed for Blackbridge Lane in Horsham and Church Lane in South Bersted, near Bognor Regis, as part of the Active Travel to School scheme.
The scheme aims to make journeys to and from school safer and more accessible for children.
West Sussex County Council are currently consulting on the plans.
Proposed improvements in Horsham focus on routes used by pupils attending Arunside Primary School and St John’s Catholic Primary School.
They would include enhanced pedestrian crossing points, footpath widening and resurfacing, and the installation of bollards to prevent vehicles from mounting the pavement.
In South Bersted, the scheme aims to improve routes for children attending South Bersted Church of England Primary School.
Plans include upgraded crossings on Orchard Way, Church Lane, and South Bersted Street, footpath widening, a new shared-surface link to connect with the local cycle network, additional bollards, and the conversion of an existing crossing into a zebra crossing.

The proposals are still at the engagement stage, with no confirmed start dates.
Funding for the design phase has been provided by Active Travel England, a government agency focused on promoting walking, cycling, and other types of wheeling.
Further funding will be sought once final designs are complete.
The council is encouraging residents to share their views on the proposed changes, which will help shape the final designs and ensure they meet the needs of the school communities.
The public consultation is open until May 22, to allow for feedback beyond the upcoming local election dates.
