Drivers to ‘expect delays’ as next steps of seafront project to begin

Work on the next steps of a seafront project is set to begin.

Overnight work to replace the aquarium roundabout with a new traffic light-controlled junction began in January.

The work is part of the third phase of the Valley Gardens project, which began in November and is due to finish this summer.

In the latest step of the project, work on the new traffic islands is set to start on April 13.

Temporary traffic lights will be installed while this is carried out, set to later be replaced with permanent traffic lights. These are expected to be operational in mid-May.

The council said the temporary lights will not operate the same way as the permanent lights and delays are expected at this time.

In addition to the construction of the traffic islands, resurfacing work will also be completed overnight from April 19 and will last approximately 2 weeks.

The aquarium junction will be closed from 8pm until 6am throughout, with diversion routes in place. Seafront buses will also be diverted via Edward Street.

Due to safety reasons, during the overnight resurfacing, the only crossing points open will be at East Street and Madeira Place.

During some of the night time closures, Madeira Drive will also be closed with access available for businesses from Dukes Mound. Cars will also be able to exit parking spaces as usual.

It will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure, said: “The new junction is going to make traffic flow easier and crossing from Steine Gardens to the seafront much safer.

“We’ve deliberately planned this part of the work to avoid the Easter holidays and peak tourist season and will be carrying out the resurfacing overnight when traffic counts are much lower.

“I appreciate this part of the project is going to be disruptive and I thank everyone for their patience. We’re entering the final stages of the Valley Gardens project which is renewing and reinvigorating a key part of the city centre. In the summer, we’ll have a new and improved space the city can be hugely proud of.”

The Valley Gardens project has brought a number of changes to the city including the resurfacing of roads, creation of new public spaces and cycle lanes, new pavements, and pedestrian crossings, as well as the beginning of construction for a new public space between the Royal Pavilion and war memorial.

Once finished, the council believes the project will allow better access for pedestrians, cyclists and visitors, new and accessible public spaces, better public transport links, trees and landscaping and sustainable outdoor infrastructure for events.

The new junction will have new pavements and separate crossings and the layout will see the removal of the roundabout as well as the traffic lights on each of the approaching roads, which currently work separately from one another.
