LNER’s curated list highlights communities across the country, encouraging visitors to swap their usual haste for wandering through country lanes, market places and scenery that seems freshly prepared for the season.
Among the top suggestions for the South East was Alfriston, characterised as a settlement that feels like an exceptionally well-preserved snapshot of history.
According to LNER, the village is located in the Cuckmere Valley and marks the gateway to the South Downs National Park. This medieval treasure offers visitors the chance to experience the area when spring arrives and the surrounding chalk hills change to a vibrant green, with the village green known as The Tye becoming a perfect sunlit spot to watch the season emerge.
For spring visitors, the organisation recommends visiting Alfriston Clergy House, which falls under National Trust stewardship.
The 14th-century thatched property includes a garden that has been described as a feast for the senses when spring tulips and primroses begin to flower.
Another suggestion is strolling along the South Downs Way towards Cuckmere Haven, where trails are lined with fresh wildflowers at this time of year.
LNER also points out Much Ado Books, an award-winning shop housed in a converted barn that is ideal for discovering a good read and enjoying a traditional Sussex cream tea.
