Ambulance services warn of intense Easter weekend pressures

Published on

Local residents are being encouraged to plan ahead and make sensible decisions about medical care as the Easter break draws near.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service is calling on people to take steps that will help reduce pressure on emergency crews during the long weekend of April 4 to 6, a time that traditionally brings a surge in demand for medical help.

Simon Clarke, who holds the position of head of integrated care at Secamb, stated that staff put in tremendous effort over Easter, supporting the large number of people who contact them for assistance.

The ambulance service expects to receive more than 13,000 emergency calls and over 18,000 NHS 111 queries across Kent, Sussex and Medway.

Officials say that taking precautions, especially regarding regular prescriptions, could substantially reduce avoidable requests for support.

During last year’s Easter period, around 1,600 calls to the 111 service concerned people seeking refills of their usual medicines.

Demand for emergency services also typically rises when routine healthcare services are unavailable.

Mr Clarke noted that getting ready beforehand, particularly with regard to managing prescriptions and choosing the right service, enables residents to make a real difference.

He continued that the service wishes everyone a happy and safe Easter and appreciates the community’s support in helping them manage the heightened demand.

People are also being reminded to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours during this time.
