Local community hub launches sale as preservationists push to save it

Newhaven Town Council has voted to sell off a popular local venue, despite gathering more than 300 signatures on a document calling for its preservation.

Meeching Hall, situated on Fort Road in Newhaven, has been described as an important local facility. The decision to make the property available for purchase was given the go-ahead by Newhaven Town Council during an additional full council meeting on Thursday, February 12.

A representative for the council explained that interested parties are being encouraged to make their interest known to Lawsons Commercial, with bids exceeding £200,000 being sought.

A six-month cooling-off period will be upheld before any transaction is completed, giving community organisations a chance to develop and present their own plans, which are particularly encouraged.

Councillor Kim Bishop, the Mayor of Newhaven, said the move represents a constructive direction after a thorough review of the council’s property holdings. The sale is anticipated to provide significant funding, enabling improvements and long-term maintenance of other local facilities while simultaneously creating fresh possibilities for this particular building.

Residents and local groups had previously voiced their opposition to the proposed disposal.

The venue hosts performances, learning sessions and meetings, along with fitness activities such as pilates, dance classes and the town’s repair cafe. Sea cadets also use the space every Monday.

Lisa Fairfield began a campaign to protect Meeching Hall, which has gathered more than 300 signatures.

Ms Fairfield said the hall is currently the sole substantial older building remaining under public ownership in the area. She noted it has formed part of community life in Newhaven for many years.

She mentioned it is the only building in the town that contains a stage.

She continued that two amateur theatre groups from the area regularly stage performances there, presenting at least five productions annually. She described it as a facility belonging to the community.
