A formal investigation has been launched by the Home Affairs Select Committee into the controversy surrounding the Crowborough facility being used to house asylum seekers.
Committee members have sought clarification from local councils and housing providers about the asylum accommodation situation at Crowborough Training Camp, prompted by concerns voiced by Nusrat Ghani about lack of openness.
The site began sheltering asylum seekers in January, which sparked protests and objections over the failure to consult the community.

Ms Ghani explained that the community requires straightforward and regular updates about the circumstances in Crowborough, how long the Home Office intends to utilise the site, and what assistance can be secured for Crowborough and neighbouring areas.
Securing involvement from the influential Home Affairs Select Committee in the Crowborough issue marks a substantial step forward.
Such scrutiny is warranted, particularly given that the Home Office has yet to clarify how the site satisfies safety, legal and regulatory standards or present long-term strategies to assist the cadets and other emergency services who were relocated from the premises.

Ms Ghani continued that crucially, since local Crowborough councillors and Wealden District Council leadership neglected to communicate with residents and elected representatives, they will now be required to answer to the committee.
In her reply, Dame Karen Bradley MP, chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, confirmed that the committee has outstanding correspondence with relevant bodies requesting further details about the site and similar facilities.
Dame Karen wrote expressing gratitude for correspondence about Crowborough Training Camp’s utilisation for asylum seeker accommodation.
With the Government placing greater importance on larger sites for asylum seekers, she had approached relevant local authorities and accommodation providers to obtain additional information about the use of new large sites in East Sussex and Inverness for asylum accommodation.
Once the committee has received replies to these letters, members will decide what further investigation to undertake on this matter.
The Home Office confirmed the initial 27 men arrived on January 22.

The conversion plans generated demonstrations and opposition from locals, who were upset about the lack of consultation and openness.
Wealden District Council was told at a recent cabinet meeting that church-attending asylum seekers in the town had suffered harassment.
Demonstrators have protested almost every week.

Crowborough residents have voiced frustration about what they consider insufficient information concerning the site’s duration, support available for the town, and the fate of displaced services.
It remains unclear how long the Crowborough site will remain operational or whether displaced cadet and emergency training activities will return.
The Home Affairs Select Committee is expected to decide on its next steps after reviewing responses from authorities.
