A portable CCTV unit to tackle crime “hot spots” is among a series of upgrades aiming to improve safety in a coastal town.
The unit is one of a number of measures that have been approved by Worthing Borough Council to help prevent crime in public spaces in the town centre and along the seafront.
Among the other improvements are four new CCTV cameras that will be installed at the High Street multi-storey car park.
All 16 existing cameras in the town centre will also be replaced with modern equipment.
The council has approved just over £67,000 in funding to carry out the improvements, using money collected from developers to improve local infrastructure.
The new camera units will be more durable and better suited for the town’s coastal climate.
In suitable areas, the cameras will now also provide better coverage, with 360-degree recording capabilities.
The portable unit will be able to move anywhere in the borough that a crime “hot-spot” is identified, or public reassurance is deemed necessary.
Footage from the cameras will be used exclusively by Sussex Police.
The upgrades follow on from two new CCTV units that were installed near Worthing railway station last year as part of the Railway Approach improvement works.
