Rescue teams rush to pier as gales sweep coast

Published on

Rescue crews were deployed on Saturday night after information came in that two people were trying to enter the sea from a pier, leading to one young person’s detention.

Shoreham’s RNLI station sent its all-weather lifeboat to the area on the evening of April 4.

The rescue vessel was launched in stormy weather following reports that a pair were attempting to get into the water from Worthing Pier.

The lifeboat was called back while still travelling after responders discovered the two people had already been found by other teams.

According to Shoreham RNLI Lifeboat Station: Dan Measor, a recently qualified volunteer lifeboat coxswain, took his first operational command on Saturday night when the all-weather lifeboat was deployed in gale force conditions to attend reports of two people attempting to enter the water from Worthing Pier.

The lifeboat was recalled during transit after it was confirmed the pair were receiving assistance from other emergency services.

A Sussex Police representative said: Officers were sent to Worthing Pier at 11pm on Saturday, April 4, after a report expressing concern for the safety of two teenagers.

Police arrived alongside coastguard teams and spoke with the pair, who were then moved to a safe location.

A 16-year-old girl was detained on suspicion of breaching a Community Protection Notice. Inquiries are ongoing.
