First responders rush to campus after mysterious substance discovered

Emergency personnel attended a report of an incident involving an unknown material.

The event occurred at approximately 3:45pm on April 14 in the Station Approach area of Hastings, near Hastings Station and East Sussex College.

Sussex Police confirmed through testing that the material presented no risk, according to a force representative.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Fire crews from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended the location.

Enquiries are continuing.

A police spokesperson said investigators were requesting that anyone who observed the occurrence or possesses relevant information contact Sussex Police digitally, referencing serial 949 of 14/04.

Stagecoach services to the railway station were halted because of the emergency. The bus operator stated the situation was cleared by 7:20pm.

At that point, a fire service official stated that East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received the call at 4:50 p.m. regarding an incident on Station Approach in Hastings. Two fire engines and four personnel were on location. Residents were asked to steer clear of the vicinity.
