An individual was set upon unexpectedly on his own property upon arriving home from his employment.

When questioned by officers, 38-year-old Dean Heron admitted he had been drinking when the events unfolded at Waterside Close in Bewbush, Crawley.

The violence took place at approximately 7am on July 9, when Heron targeted the victim who had just driven back to his residence following a night shift.

Heron punched the victim in the face, produced a knife during the confrontation, and proceeded to choke him.

Members of the public contacted the emergency services, which resulted in Heron being taken into custody. He had no fixed address.

At Lewes Crown Court on April 10, Heron entered guilty pleas to attempted grievous bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and possessing a blade in a public place.

He was handed a custodial term of three years and four months.

Following the sentencing, Crawley District Commander Chief Inspector Steven Turner stated that this was a troubling incident that occurred near a primary school prior to the start of the school day.

It sparked unease among local residents, parents, children, and the wider community, with officers promptly attending the scene to safely detain Heron, who was under the influence of alcohol.

Heron’s assault was completely unprovoked and continues to impact the victim. His conduct was inexcusable.

Reports of violent behaviour and knife-related offences are treated with the utmost seriousness, and officials are pleased that a potentially hazardous individual has now been removed from society.
