Town centre roads shut following ambulance-scaffolding crash

A critical incident has forced officials to shut North Road in Brighton.

The sector adjacent to Helm Gallery has been cordoned off by emergency responders.

Workers have been spotted taking down scaffolding poles within the restricted zone.

Jubilee Street has additionally been sealed off, with officers halting all vehicle movement in both directions.

Several police cars have been deployed along North Road.

Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for statements.

The road has since been reopened and the barrier removed.

Police statement

Officers took action after an ambulance collided with scaffolding structures.

Ambulance was unoccupied

According to a spokesperson from South East Coast Ambulance Service, the ambulance was proceeding to a local emergency but was not carrying any patients.

The statement declared that one of their ambulances collided with scaffolding on North Road, Brighton shortly after 10:00 this morning on 15 April.

At the moment of impact, the ambulance was heading to an emergency in the locality and was not transporting any patients. Other crews had been sent for that specific emergency and arrived at the location.

Paramedics assessed the crew at the scene. They were discharged with no injuries.

Fire service statement

An East Sussex Fire Rescue Service representative announced that they received a call at 10.02am on 15 April concerning a collision between a vehicle and scaffolding on North Road, Brighton.

Firefighters collaborated with the scaffolding company to release the vehicle and confirm the area was secure.
