She delved into folk, rock, ambient, and progressive genres, eventually making a distinct mark.
Renowned for her debut album at just 17, One House Left Standing in 1971, she swiftly garnered comparisons to Joni Mitchell but managed to retain a distinctive artistic touch, progressing into a solo career that continually pushed boundaries.
Her illustrious career spills over to the 1970s with celebrated albums like October, Stage Door Johnnies, and Abracadabra.
She toured with leading artists or bands like John Martyn, Procol Harum, Jethro Tull, and King Crimson.
Widely acknowledged for her collaborative spirit, Hamill lent her vocals to Steve Howe’s The Steve Howe Album, Jon & Vangelis’s The Friends of Mr Cairo, the jazz-fusion group Morrissey-Mullen, and the band Wishbone Ash.
Trailblazing in her solo journey, she explored new territories with Touchpaper in 1984 and the innovative Voices in 1986, a wordless vocal album that anticipated the rise of ambient and new age music.
Hamill’s music has been recognised on television and film, and her songs have been revisited by international artists.
The 2000s saw Hamill return to a prolific run of albums, including The Lost & the Lovers in 2004, When Daylight Arrives in 2015, Over Dark Apples in 2019, A Pocket Full of Love Songs in 2022, and most recently Troubadour in 2025.
She recorded two albums with the progressive rock band Fragile, contributing lead vocals to their Yes-inspired original material.
Maintaining her versatility, Hamill, with her band, continues embedding fresh energy into her songwriting and live shows, displaying her staying power as one of Britain’s most distinctive and enduring independent artists.
Tickets for the Sussex shows are available via the respective venues’ websites.
