Coastal town set for round-the-clock airport bus service next month

Published on

A continuous bus route linking a seaside town with an airport is scheduled to commence operations next month.

Metrobus will roll out route 500, linking Gatwick Airport and Eastbourne, with services beginning on May 9.

The fresh route will run at intervals not exceeding 60 minutes, seven days a week, replacing two existing services currently operating throughout Sussex.

Passengers can board at Willingdon, Hailsham, East Hoathly, Halland, Uckfield, Maresfield, Forest Row, East Grinstead, Copthorne and the Manor Royal Business District.

This fresh route supersedes the current route 54 running between Eastbourne and Uckfield, as well as route 261 connecting Uckfield and East Grinstead.

Nick Hill, commercial director at Metrobus, said the introduction of service 500 marks substantial progress in strengthening transport links across Sussex. Through partnership with local authorities and Gatwick Airport, the company is delivering a reliable, affordable and round-the-clock service that serves local residents, shift workers and airport passengers. The new route will enhance access to jobs, education and Gatwick Airport while improving connections between communities in both East and West Sussex.

The service seeks to provide better travel choices for local residents, those employed during unsociable hours and travellers flying to and from the airport.

The scheme involves cooperation between Metrobus, the airport and the county councils of East and West Sussex.

Concessionary passes for older passengers will be accepted and fares will be capped at £3.

Jonathan Pollard, chief commercial officer at London Gatwick, said the airport was delighted to be partnering with Metrobus to launch the eighth direct bus service serving London Gatwick. Dependable and budget-friendly public transport is vital for passengers and for the thousands of employees working at the airport around the clock, and service 500 will make it easier for communities across East and West Sussex to access the airport. This new route aligns with the airport’s commitment to expanding sustainable ground transport while boosting regional links.

The launch follows earlier overnight bus expansions backed by Gatwick, with Metrobus introducing evening and early-morning services on routes 20 and 200 in February 2024, bringing uninterrupted service to areas including Horsham, Horley East and Pease Pottage.

London Gatwick will additionally trial overnight rail services from Reading, Guildford, Reigate and Redhill commencing June 6, extending late-night public transport options to the airport beyond the bus network.
