Local residents have expressed fears that alcoholic drinks sold from a petrol station may be fueling disorderly behaviour in their neighbourhood.

Individuals residing in St Leonards Gardens, Hove, have voiced their concerns about the ongoing issue, stating it has caused them considerable worry and distress.

The leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, Councillor Bella Sankey, who represents the Wish ward, suggested that the problems faced by community members seem linked to alcohol being sold without proper regulation at the BP M&S facility on Kingsway.

An investigation has commenced, with Brighton and Hove City Council and Sussex Police holding discussions with BP representatives.

Cllr Sankey expressed gratitude to St Leonards Gardens households for alerting her and Councillor Paul Nann to what they perceive as the unregulated sale of alcohol from the BP M&S outlet on Kingsway, which she noted is producing antisocial conduct and generating fear, intimidation and suffering among local residents.

Representatives from the council’s licensing division alongside the local police community support officer are participating in the inquiry.

The grievances raised by inhabitants are receiving appropriate scrutiny, a combined inspection has taken place, the company has received official communication, and interim restrictions have been imposed while the investigation continues.

A BP representative said the company works actively with local authorities and police whenever matters are flagged.

A Sussex Police representative noted that incidents of theft have been recorded at the BP M&S Food store on Kingsway in Hove.

Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Unit and Licensing Unit are engaging with BP on a persistent basis to address these occurrences and encourage reporting to support thorough investigations and ensure those responsible face consequences.

M&S was also invited to comment but referred requests to BP.
