When flytippers struck Sussex

Flytipping and rubbish are issues that regularly plague the streets of Sussex.

We look back at the times extreme litter louts have struck.

In 2009, the Environment Agency prosecuted a man after he transformed a West Sussex field into an illegal bonfire where large volumes of waste were dangerously burned. Paul Boniface of Upper Brighton Road, Sompting, appeared at Worthing Magistrates Court on October 26 that year and pleaded guilty to two waste disposal offences. Boniface was fined £250 for each offence and ordered to pay costs of £250.

The court heard that the Environment Agency had received complaints in August 2009 that waste was being tipped illegally and then set on fire in a field in Sompting along the A27 between Lambleys Lane and Church Lane. Inspections revealed that mixed waste materials and a volume of construction debris had been deposited on the site and there was evidence that some of the material had been set alight.

On October 9, 2009, at 7pm, an Environment Agency officer was driving along the A27 in Sompting and saw a large fire blazing on the site, comprising cabinets and tables clearly alight.
