A castle in Sussex with “fairytale-like grounds” has been named one of the UK’s best places to see tulips this spring.

Country Living has shared its picks of the 7 best locations to visit this spring across the country to enjoy the flowers.

Described as “one of the most colourful signifiers of spring”, tulips come in a range of colours, including red, yellow, pink, white, orange, and deep purple.

If you are looking for places to see them in Sussex this year, look no further than Arundel Castle.

Arundel Castle named among UK’s 7 best places to see tulips

Arundel Castle was established by Roger de Montgomery in the 11th century.

Despite being damaged in the English Civil War, it was restored in the 18th and early 19th centuries by Charles Howard, 11th Duke of Norfolk.

Today, it sits proudly overlooking the market town of Arundel, and has plenty to do and see there.

The annual tulip festival at the castle takes place each spring and attracts plenty of visitors.

Among the flowers on display this year are red tulip varieties, including Ile de France, Oxford and Apeldoorn, which are covering the castle banks.

Purple Dream, Burgundy and Golden Oxford tulips have also been included, and tall blue camassia spires have begun flowering alongside the main displays.

Country Living writes: “Arundel Castle, with its fairytale-like grounds, has to be one of the most romantic places to see tulips in the UK, boasting a display of over 120,000 bulbs in themed arrangements.

“Visitors can wander through the atmospheric gardens and see over 150 varieties of tulips planted across the castle’s 40 acres of historic gardens, curated by Head Gardener Martin Duncan.

Tickets are available for garden-only entry, with combined passes also offered for access to the castle and bedrooms.
