Global artists return for Brighton’s hip-hop theatre show

Published on

Brighton’s cultural venue is preparing to host the return of the celebrated street dance performance festival.

The annual event, led by artistic director Jonzi D, will occupy the venue on Wednesday, May 27, with shows scheduled for 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

The programme will feature dancers, turntablists, aerosol artists and improvisation workshops from British and international talent during a full takeover of the venue.

Three homegrown dance collectives will also perform: Streetfunk, Project Female and Visual Poets Company, each offering their individual performance styles.

More details and booking options are available at brightondome.org.

Streetfunk, headed by JP Omari in his capacity as Breakin’ Convention’s Brighton ambassador, will present a variety of movement techniques in a piece influenced by the organisation and synchronisation of a classical orchestra.

Project Female’s youthful ensemble will perform a blend of contemporary and street dance styles, while Visual Poets Company will deliver dance theatre focused on bodily storytelling, mood and collective participation.

Overseas acts include TRAPLORD, a production that received an Olivier Award, devised by choreographer Ivan Blackstock, exploring male identity and psychological wellbeing.

The three-piece Femme Fatale from Los Angeles, noted for their refined choreography, will also feature, alongside ILL-Abilities, a breaking collective comprising performers with disabilities from the Netherlands and Brazil, invited back in response to public interest.

Jonzi D offered remarks about the British tour, noting that the latest UK circuit includes fresh venues, award-winning conceptual pieces, an international popping trio and what were described as the most distinctive breakers globally, adding that the festival continuously challenges expectations.

Since its launch in 2004, Breakin’ Convention has occupied a significant position in the international hip-hop dance theatre landscape, gathering leading artists and connecting communities through movement, sound and storytelling.
