Men’s mental health support group celebrates first anniversary

Published on

A support organisation for men’s mental wellbeing is preparing to mark its first anniversary with a reminder about how talking can make a real difference.

Talk Club Hove operates as part of the broader Talk Club organisation, having been established by founder David Eakins after he himself faced mental health difficulties.

He noted that it has now been a full year since The Argus ran his piece describing his struggle with mental health, how Talk Club (a charity focused on men’s mental fitness) became transformative for him, and why launching Talk Club Hove felt essential.

Over the past twelve months, the gatherings have taken place every Monday at half past seven in a shepherd’s hut located in the beer garden of The George Payne.

These meetings have drawn 42 men from varied ages and circumstances, with each person opening up and helping fellow attendees through private discussions.

Mr Eakins observed that what has impressed him most is not merely the difficulties faced, but the readiness to attend, communicate openly and assist each other.

During that period, these gatherings have shown him ten significant insights.

Beyond Talk Club, opportunities for men to speak candidly about their true emotions remain uncommon.

Yet the straightforward act of sharing what has been suppressed can provide substantial relief.

He stressed that while the gatherings do not constitute formal therapy, those who participate often find them profoundly healing.

Conversations cover topics including anxiety, past hurts, low mood, neurodiversity, relationship breakdowns, isolation and thoughts of ending one’s life.

Mr Eakins feels the group tackles a significant problem in contemporary life.

He pointed out that although approximately 70 million individuals reside in the United Kingdom, countless numbers experience profound loneliness with their inner thoughts and feelings.

Places such as Talk Club work to shift this reality.

The gatherings also include lighter moments and motivation.

Mr Eakins added that participants also discuss everyday life, sources of happiness, and approaches to actively improving their mental wellbeing.

Mutual confidence and consideration underpin the group’s guiding principles.

He stated that every individual’s experience is highly private, and it is a privilege when members have sufficient faith in the group to disclose it.

Talk Club Hove welcomes male participants who are at least eighteen years old.
