A community swimming facility is appealing to local residents for assistance in ensuring its continued operation through a fresh fundraising initiative.

The Brighton Swimming Centre, a charitable pool located in Kemp Town, kicked off its £50,000 crowdfunding effort on Tuesday, April 14 as part of the ‘Keep Brighton Swimming’ drive.

The immediate request follows the uncovering of significant building problems, including deterioration to a front wall and a roof that has been allowing water through.

Michael Kruger, managing director at Brighton Swimming Centre, said this marks the first occasion they have needed to seek assistance.

As a charitable organisation, all revenue generated is reinvested directly into the facility.

These critical restoration works cannot be postponed, but with public backing, this venue can be preserved for years to come.

Constructed in 1976 for St Mary’s Hall School, the centre has spent almost five decades serving successive generations of Brighton residents through swimming instruction, coaching and water safety education.

Weekly attendance exceeds 1,200 individuals spanning all age groups and skill levels.

The facility houses Brighton Swimming School, Pool to Pier and Swim UK, and represents Sussex’s sole Swimming Teachers’ Association approved training establishment.

Jade, one of the managers tasked with obtaining funding and grants, described it as an inviting and accessible environment where individuals receive warmth and understanding regardless of their initial ability.

Freya, another manager responsible for ensuring seamless daily operations, noted it offers a tranquil heated pool staffed by compassionate teachers, allowing visitors to feel at ease immediately.

As Brighton’s only independent charitable instructional pool, the centre holds significant importance for a coastal city.

Mr Kruger observed that a seaside city bears a duty to ensure residents remain safe and assured around water.

With mounting pressures on family-oriented amenities in the area, facilities of this kind are growing increasingly vital.

A celebration marking the venue’s 50th anniversary will occur on May 30 and May 31.

The occasion will recognise the centre’s contributions to the local community while gathering resources to guarantee its continued operation.

Contributions received prior to May 31, 2026 will be included in a prize draw featuring over £500 worth of incentives, such as swimming instruction and coaching workshops.
