Local authority to fix coastal defences for £90k

Chichester District Council will allocate £90,000 towards restoring two boundary walls situated above sea defences in Selsey.

The funding was given the go-ahead during a cabinet session on Tuesday (April 14). While £48,000 had been set aside in the capital budget, the repairs proved more expensive than initially estimated, necessitating an additional £42,000 from reserve funds.

The two brick walls at Sea Grove, each standing 2.2 metres tall, were built approximately in 1996 and remain under council ownership.

Three decades of exposure to coastal conditions have caused significant deterioration. One wall has become structurally unsound and must be taken down and reconstructed. The second wall requires repairs, repointing and rendering work.

Council leader Councillor Adrian Moss stated that as a conscientious landowner, carrying out these repairs would continue safeguarding the privacy of nearby homes and enable residents of Sea Grove to use the promenade safely.

He noted that given all the sea defence work planned for Selsey, this formed part of crucial efforts to protect that section of the district.

The project will be executed by a contractor with experience in coastal construction and overseen by the council’s coastal engineering team, Coastal Partners.
