An emergency situation developed outside Brighton railway station this evening, with a section of the entrance sealed off by authorities.

Fire crews and police vehicles were stationed at the station as reports emerged of an incident occurring on the structure surrounding the building.

Footage captured at the location showed an individual holding onto the metal framework above the station.

Representatives from Sussex Police and the fire service have been asked to provide statements.

Our correspondent Joseph Blakely was heading to the station to catch a train home when he observed the situation developing.

He explained that upon arrival, a significant gathering of people had formed in front of the station building. Three fire engines had been positioned to the left of the entrance alongside numerous firefighters. The fire service had extended a ladder against the side of the building and seemed to be attending to an individual on top of the scaffolding. A restricted area had been established around the vicinity, and a police vehicle arrived at the location as he departed to board his train.

The Argus has verified that a male individual was scaling the scaffolding at Brighton station, prompting a substantial emergency services response.

The situation was thought to involve mental health concerns.

A member of the public present at the scene indicated that the man had been suspended from the scaffolding.

Police, fire, and ambulance units were all visible at Brighton station.

Onlookers gathered as the individual ascended the scaffolding, with emergency services working to bring him down safely.

The man has since been removed from the scaffolding.

Officers brought him down from the structure, spoke with him for some time, and then he was placed into an ambulance.

An observer mentioned that officers had managed to get the man down after approaching him undetected and restraining him. They described how two officers crept up behind the individual and brought him down. At one stage he had been dangling from the scaffolding. Eventually he moved back over the structure, and the officers went up and brought him down by force. He had been clinging to the scaffolding with just one hand.

Another individual at the scene indicated that three officers had managed to bring the man down by securing him to themselves. She explained that she observed them lower him using a hydraulic platform from the fire engine. The officers secured him in a harness-like manner, strapping him to themselves before descending. Three officers were involved in the operation.

Following his removal from the scaffolding by police, the man was escorted along Trafalgar Street to undergo assessment by medical personnel, while smoking a cigarette.

He spent considerable time speaking with ambulance staff and officers on the lower part of Trafalgar Street, as spectators observed from higher vantage points.

He was subsequently placed into an ambulance.

After being taken down from the scaffolding, the man spent time conversing with officers and ambulance staff while smoking a cigarette.

A railway employee disclosed that the same individual had been climbing the scaffolding at Brighton station on the previous day as well. He noted that this appeared to be a mental health incident. The same person had been scaling the scaffolding the previous day but had not progressed as far. On this occasion he made it onto the roof. This was the second consecutive day. Police raised a platform and lifted him down. Just another day in Brighton.

Authorities are awaiting a statement from British Transport Police.
