Convicted animal dealer fined £157k after puppies found in faeces-filled caravan

A woman who operated a canine trafficking enterprise has been directed to pay a substantial sum after authorities discovered animals living in deplorable conditions inside her mobile home in Sussex.

Micaela Anderson-Letts managed an international puppy smuggling ring that posed a significant rabies contamination risk to the nation.

She housed creatures in filthy circumstances at various sites across Surrey and Sussex after bringing them into the UK through fraudulent and altered animal documentation.

Multiple puppies were discovered left to fend for themselves inside a caravan at a Lister Road, Eastbourne car park during 2021.

The accused, aged 36 and residing in South Walk, Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, previously received her sentence on January 7, 2025 at Kingston Crown Court for inflicting unnecessary harm on a protected creature under section 4(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2001.

She was handed a two-year custodial sentence suspended for two years, prohibited from owning animals indefinitely, and instructed to perform 300 hours of community service.

This outcome followed an extensive and intricate probe conducted by the Sussex Police Rural Crime Unit alongside financial specialists collaborating with partner organisations, local councils, and other law enforcement agencies.

A canine and 35 young dogs were recovered from the squalid caravan by officers and RSPCA officers in Eastbourne on July 26, 2021, after police received a welfare concern report.

Lead investigator PC Marie Jenner from the Sussex Police Rural Crime Unit stated in 2025 that the entire flooring was blanketed in excrement and urine-soaked cardboard. Exposed electrical cables, nails and screws, along with shattered timber fragments and implements, were scattered throughout. The setting was entirely unfit for habitation.

Fourteen of the puppies required veterinary hospital care, though one perished from what an autopsy identified as severe dehydration and lack of nutrition. After appropriate medical attention, the surviving animals were placed in new homes.

The subsequent inquiry established that Anderson-Letts inflicted unnecessary suffering on a protected creature, specifically a dog and her puppies, through inaction, namely by failing to transport the animals adequately and neglecting to provide veterinary care she knew or should reasonably have known would produce such harm between July 24 and July 26, 2021.

She was apprehended, charged and admitted guilt to all violations prior to her sentencing.

After the financial probe concluded, Anderson-Letts returned to Kingston Crown Court where a Confiscation Order was issued.

The directive mandates she remit £157,269.25 within a three-month timeframe or risk serving an additional 18 months behind bars.
