Graduate turns pal’s concept into gifting startup after university

A maternity practitioner has established a gift delivery company after a personal experience helping a companion during a challenging period.

Vix Fuller, who studied at the University of Brighton and lives in Eastbourne, partnered to create Send a Smile, a gifting business that produces carefully selected wellbeing packages for individuals dealing with sickness, loss, or emotional distress.

The company was established after Ms Fuller assisted a dear friend who received a significant medical diagnosis.

She discovered that standard flowers and ready-made presents failed to express her genuine concern.

She instead assembled a collection of her friend’s preferred items.

This modest gesture provided the foundation for the enterprise.

She explained that flowers seemed too conventional, and commercially available options did not adequately convey her deep care or match what her friend was experiencing.

She eventually collaborated with another companion to gather all of her friend’s favourite items and sent them in a parcel. The recipient was delighted with the present and it brought joy.

The gesture held significant meaning for her, and they took satisfaction in assembling something heartfelt.

She has observed how significant presents can affect those who get them.

Individuals wish to support one another but often feel uncertain about the appropriate approach. Her goal was to simplify the process of sending something truly meaningful without unnecessary deliberation.

Her background in midwifery taught her the value of approaching people with sensitivity, particularly during delicate times. This principle underpins the entire Send a Smile concept.

The service enables individuals to express compassion and support through bespoke, thoughtfully assembled gifts.

Thelma Lackey, who leads the midwifery programme at the University of Brighton, stated that Ms Fuller’s trajectory illustrates how fundamental midwifery principles such as kindness, understanding and genuine awareness of individual needs can be applied well beyond healthcare settings.

Since beginning operations, Send a Smile has facilitated the delivery of thousands of presents throughout Britain.

The fledgling company received Small Business Sunday recognition in 2025, gaining access to mentorship and industry connections.
