A fresh stage show explores the dangers of media deception and the pursuit of authenticity.

The sixty-minute piece, titled You Oughta Be in Pictures, showcases a solo performance from acclaimed fringe theatre innovator Polis Loizou, appearing at the Brighton Fringe.

Through a simulated 1940s casting call scenario, the work delves into trickery, storytelling techniques and the golden age of Hollywood.

Polis Loizou explained that the intention was to craft something examining how art is made and why we must stay vigilant against being fooled by it. He noted that handing over our critical faculties to those who manipulate us puts everything at risk.

The narrative centres on a hopeful performer auditioning to succeed a lead actor in a cheap horror movie who has passed away under puzzling conditions.

While the footage and roles Loizou presents are entirely fictional, the piece demonstrates how easily audiences can be convinced by fabricated narratives.

The concept originated from online theories that spread when The Blair Witch Project debuted, misleading many into accepting the documentary-style presentation depicted real events.

Following his film studies, Loizou moved into theatre direction. His fascination with cinematic methods and dramatic presentation traces back to his childhood in Cyprus.

You Oughta Be in Pictures will be staged at the Lantern Theatre on May 20th and May 26th at 9pm.

This performance forms part of the Brighton Fringe programme.
