Improved care is on the way for women facing one of pregnancy’s most severe conditions.
A new commitment to equal access to medication for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) has been included in the government’s new Women’s Health Strategy.
Lewes MP James MacCleary, whose constituency includes Newhaven, Seaford and Polegate, has welcomed the move after successfully campaigning for national action.
HG is a severe pregnancy condition that can cause relentless vomiting, dehydration, rapid weight loss and serious mental health decline.
It affects around 30,000 women each year and results in an estimated 37,000 hospital admissions annually.

Mr MacCleary raised the issue directly with the Prime Minister and secured a meeting with women’s health minister, Baroness Merron, alongside HG campaigners.
Mr MacCleary said: “Today’s announcement is a major step forward for women suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum and a real tribute to the campaigners who have worked so hard to make this happen.
“This is a very welcome breakthrough, but it must now be followed by action.
“We need to make sure this commitment is delivered in practice so that women across the country can finally get the care and medication they need when they need it.
