Haze settles over Brighton following blaze at local recycling centre

Published on

Fire crews have been deployed to tackle a large fire at a recycling plant in the coastal city of Brighton and Hove, with dense smoke billowing across the surrounding area.

The blaze has broken out at the recycling centre on Wilson Avenue in the Whitehawk neighbourhood.

Emergency services received the first alert at 1.02pm on April 28, 2026. By 13.20, two fire engines had reached the scene at Sheepcote Valley.

The fire involves numerous plastic wheelie bins at the Veolia Environmental Services facility. Crews are using two main water jets and firefighting foam, supported by two breathing apparatus sets. Three fire engines are now working at the location.

Emergency operators at Joint Fire Control have logged over 25 calls from local residents reporting the incident.

Dark plumes of smoke are visible throughout Brighton, including the city centre, and officials are advising people to keep all doors and windows firmly closed.

Local residents have been urged to steer clear of the immediate area due to the considerable amount of smoke in the atmosphere.

There have been no reports of any injuries. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
