A fire has broken out in Brighton, with large plumes of smoke visible across the city.
It appears the fire has broken out at the recycling centre on Wilson Avenue in Whitehawk.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue service said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 1.02pm on April 28, 2026 to reports of a fire at Sheepcote Valley in Brighton.
“As of 13.20 we have two fire engines in attendance.
“Please avoid the area. There is quite a lot of smoke and we are asking people to keep doors and windows closed.
“Our Joint Fire Control has received more than 25 999 calls from members of the public.
“We will provide further updates.”

It is believed the fire is happening at the Veolia Enviromental Services recycling centre in Whitehawk.
The smoke is visible in the centre of Brighton.

Another update from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, who say the fire involves “multiple plastic wheelie bins”.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “We can confirm there is a fire involving multiple plastic wheelie bins.
“Firefighters are using two main jets and firefighting foam, as well as two breathing apparatus.
“Three fire engines are now at the scene.
“There are no reports of injuries.”

Another update from East Sussex Fire and Rescue, which says that the fire is now largely put out.
A spokesperson said: “Breathing apparatus has been withdrawn as the fire is believed to be out.
“Firefighters are now damping down using hose reel jets to ensure any hot spots are dealt with.”

UPDATE:
We previously reported that the fire had taken place at the Veolia recycling centre on Wilson Avenue.
However, a spokesperson for Veolia said that the fire did not happen at ITS facility, but actually broke out at an unrelated council bin store nearby.
The spokesperson said that the Veolia facility did close temporarily, following advice from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, but that it has now reopened.
We awaiting a comment from Brighton and Hove City Council.
