Fire crews tackled a fire at a waste processing plant on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services attended the Veolia Environmental Services recycling centre, which is run by the local authority, on Wilson Road in Whitehawk, Brighton.

Dense plumes of dark smoke were visible across Brighton and Hove.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received the first report of the blaze at 1pm on April 28.

Two fire appliances were sent to the scene, which ESFRS stated involved multiple wheelie bins.

A statement from ESFRS issued at 1.30pm indicated confirmation of a fire involving multiple plastic wheelie bins. Firefighters were employing two main jets and firefighting foam, along with two breathing apparatus sets. Three fire engines were deployed at the location.

The service confirmed no casualties resulted from the incident.

ESFRS also issued an appeal for people to avoid the area, noting there was quite a lot of smoke and requesting that residents keep doors and windows closed.
