A traders group has expressed concerns about the “major obstacles” to opening a business in its town.
Lewes Traders Group has urged action to address economic pressures affecting businesses in Lewes.
The group pointed to high rent, business rates, and a lack of bank branches as barriers to growth.
Ashley Price, organiser of Lewes Traders Group, has called for a “complete overhaul” of current conditions.

Mr Price said: “We have a town with a great community and a wonderfully diverse range of shops.
“We are fortunate to have a number of tourist attractions to bring visitors to Lewes and, of course, our Bonfire Night celebrations are known worldwide.
“However, no one can deny there are major obstacles to anyone opening a business in the town.
“Solving them isn’t going to be easy and isn’t something that can be fixed overnight, or done piecemeal.
“It needs a complete overhaul.”
Lewes is known for its independent retail scene and attractions like Harvey’s Brewery and Anne of Cleves House.

But traders say underlying issues including long leases on council-owned units, parking shortages, the boarded-up bus station, and inadequate signage are undermining business viability.
The group said these factors combine to “gradually erode the viability of small businesses over time.”
Closures are outpacing new openings, and several premises have remained empty for years.
Mr Price said: “This could include reviewing lease flexibility, improving short-term access and parking solutions, supporting temporary use of empty premises, and ensuring clearer communication between traders and decision-makers.
“I will be calling on the individual councillors, council departments, landlords and other stakeholders to work together to make Lewes more attractive and supportive to any new shop or trader opening in the town, which will benefit the whole community.”

Lewes Traders Group believes a coordinated strategy could help the town realise its potential.
In the statement, the group said: “Lewes has all the ingredients of a thriving market town.
“With coordinated action and a willingness to address these barriers directly, it can become not just a beautiful place to visit – but a genuinely sustainable place to run a business.”
The group is calling on councillors, landlords, and authorities to work together on solutions.
Lewes District Council declined to comment at this time due to upcoming local elections.
