Without this financial support, scientific investigation will halt. Britain’s national radio astronomy installation will effectively go quiet.
Researchers characterise this choice as myopic, harmful and misaligned with national scientific objectives. The reductions form part of a broader trimming of resources for astronomy, nuclear physics and particle physics across the coming four years. Escalating expenses have compressed finances, and radio astronomy, despite its worldwide importance, has become a victim.
The elimination of e-MERLIN would signify forfeiture of a crucial component of Britain’s role in global astronomy. It would impede progress on the Square Kilometre Array, the most ambitious radio telescope endeavor ever undertaken, whose administrative base resides at Jodrell Bank. It would diminish educational initiatives, compromise public involvement and damage Britain’s standing in scientific communities. Most significantly, it would silence an installation that has been eavesdropping on the cosmos for almost seven decades.
