Sussex leaders push for solar power expansion amid prolonged heat

The recent stretch of extended warm weather has prompted demands for advancement in renewable energy across Sussex.

The chair of the Greater Brighton Economic Board, Caroline Baxter, noted that the elevated temperatures experienced over recent months have highlighted the importance for the county to refocus attention on solar energy and additional renewable sources.

One of the organisation’s projects, Solar Across Sussex, is centred on implementing solar generation at scale.

Ms Baxter, who additionally serves as the leader of Worthing Borough Council, stated that as one of Britain’s sunniest areas, Sussex holds an excellent position to capitalise on solar power.

Through Solar Across Sussex, there exists a genuine chance to address costly energy bills, strengthen energy independence, combat climate change and support growth of the regional green economy.

Solar energy is and must continue to be a key priority for the area as efforts are made to address climate change, reduce environmental damage and adjust to the shifting weather patterns now being observed.

The GBEB speaks on behalf of seven Sussex local authority regions and is aiming to achieve energy self-sufficiency for the area by 2040.

The board’s Sussex Energy programme has already produced results, with renewable energy installations growing by approximately 27 percent throughout Sussex between 2024 and 2025.

However, Ms Baxter indicated that the current task is to maintain and increase this momentum.

Expanding solar generation within Sussex will enhance energy security, decrease vulnerability to unpredictable energy costs, and has the possibility to draw investment and generate additional employment, all while minimising environmental harm.
