Brighton and Hove public consultation opens on five traffic camera locations

Speed enforcement cameras could soon be installed at multiple major intersections throughout the city.

Brighton and Hove City Council began a six-week public consultation on August 12 regarding proposals to place cameras at five sites across the city. The initiative aims to strengthen enforcement of current traffic rules, enhance road safety, and address hazardous driving behaviour.

Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure, explained that resident and road user safety remains the council’s paramount concern. He added that the proposals would enable more effective enforcement of traffic regulations and promote safer driving practices throughout the city. Traffic rules exist to protect individuals and minimise the risk of collisions between different types of road users. The council is dedicated to improving road safety for all. Officials are eager to hear from local residents, businesses, and anyone who travels through these areas to gather their perspectives as part of the consultation process.

The proposed camera locations include Carden Avenue onto Carden Crescent, where enforcement would target one-way street violations. Additional cameras would be positioned at London Road onto New England Road and Ditchling Road onto Baker Street to monitor prohibited left turns. West Street onto Rottingdean High Street would see cameras enforcing a banned right turn, while Francis Street would have cameras to address motor vehicle access restrictions.

The council received new Moving Traffic Enforcement powers from the Department for Transport late last year. These powers enable the council to utilise approved camera technology to enforce existing traffic restrictions, a measure already adopted by numerous local authorities throughout England.

The council intends to trial camera enforcement at three of the city’s School Streets locations beginning in September.

Under these plans, drivers who breach the regulations could face a Penalty Charge Notice of £70, reduced to £35 if settled within three weeks.

Following the cameras’ introduction, there will be an initial six-month grace period. During this time, vehicle registered keepers would receive a warning notice as the first response rather than a Penalty Charge Notice.

Residents, businesses, and road users affected by these proposals are urged to submit their views before the consultation deadline.
