Activists are urging East Sussex County Council to enhance safety measures along a footpath that Lewes pupils frequently travel.

On a digital petition published through the council’s own platform, supporters are pressing the authority to either sanction and finance a pedestrian crossing on Offham Road or implement alternative road safety enhancements.

The petition highlights specific worries regarding an unofficial crossing near the summit of the Piggy Steps, a staircase section connecting Blois Road to Offham Road and subsequently to a path leading toward Hill Road.

Supporters maintain this footpath sees regular use by schoolchildren.

The petition states that parents, educators, and local inhabitants have repeatedly flagged the dangers children encounter when crossing. Some households are opting for extended walking detours or resorting to driving short distances to circumvent the peril, adding to local traffic.

It continues that the absence of a secure crossing on Offham Road creates an ongoing hazard for children and families. Erecting a pedestrian crossing would diminish peril, foster eco-friendly commuting, and enhance community welfare.

The petition further contends that the council should examine various alternatives, including the possibility of introducing a school crossing patrol attendant.

As another potential solution, the petition suggests the council investigate lowering the speed restriction from 40mph to 30mph, alongside deploying Radar Activated Speed Displays and a crossing refuge.

Backers assert a crossing in the vicinity would also prompt additional parents to utilise the path, whilst functioning as a device that slows traffic, reducing speeds of vehicles approaching the town.
