A Brighton resident has found himself in a dispute with Brighton and Hove City Council regarding the condition of his bathroom, which he claims has become infested with parasites.

Taner Yilmazer, aged 46, alleges that the local authority has failed to address issues at his council property on Canterbury Drive, where he has resided for five years.

According to Mr Yilmazer, the bathroom has been subject to continuous flooding, with leeches appearing in the shower drain.

The accessible shower drain has become clogged, resulting in water accumulation that has enabled the parasites to establish themselves in the drainage system.

Additionally, repeated leaks from the flat above have exacerbated the moisture problems in the bathroom.

Mr Yilmazer stated that he has been compelled to remove standing water using a cup, pouring it into the toilet to manage the flooding.

During these attempts, he reportedly slipped and injured his shoulder.

Concerns about electrical safety have reportedly prompted Mr Yilmazer to use his balcony for showering purposes.

He claimed that water leaking through the ceiling may have compromised the wiring in the bathroom, creating a potential electrocution hazard.

The water supply in the shower allegedly functions only at cold temperatures, despite Mr Yilmazer stating that heated water would help alleviate muscle aches resulting from his injuries.

The resident indicated that the living conditions have caused significant psychological distress, including anxiety and panic attacks that have affected his ability to carry out daily activities.

On May 31, an NHS nurse who provides care for Mr Yilmazer submitted a letter supporting his case.

The letter reportedly described how the conditions were impacting both his physical and mental wellbeing, and urged the council to undertake repairs.

Mr Yilmazer stated that council representatives have visited the property multiple times but limited their activities to inspection rather than implementing solutions.

The local authority responded that flooding problems stem from bathroom alterations carried out without authorisation or involvement from the council.

A spokesperson noted that while the council had begun assessing what modifications might be required to accommodate the resident’s needs, changes made by others have complicated the process.

The council indicated that Mr Yilmazer had declined offers of temporary repairs while a permanent resolution was developed.

Mr Yilmazer denied responsibility for any alterations, asserting that no structural changes had been undertaken by him.

He claimed that visits from council staff consistently ended without any meaningful intervention to address the flooding or pest infestation.

He maintained that superficial repairs would be inadequate.

The council confirmed that a meeting with the resident had been scheduled, during which officials intended to present their offer of interim work, arrange pest control services to address the reported parasite issue, and discuss longer-term improvements to the property.
