A fatality has been reported following an incident at a Christian festival where a sign collapsed.

Emergency responders attended the Big Church Festival at the Wiston Estate in the Steyning area on the afternoon of August 28, shortly after 3.30pm, following reports that a large sign had fallen and caused injuries to several individuals.

Sussex Police have confirmed that a 41-year-old man from Eastbourne was pronounced dead at the location.

His family has been notified and is receiving assistance from specialist officers.

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh stated that the event represented a devastating occurrence and extended condolences to the victim’s loved ones during this challenging period.

A minimum of six additional casualties sustained injuries in the incident and required hospital treatment.

McDonagh acknowledged the significant distress experienced by attendees and confirmed that collaborative efforts with partner organisations were underway to determine the precise circumstances.

Authorities confirmed that several thousand people were present at the gathering, and members of the public with relevant information or recorded footage have been urged to make contact through online reporting channels or by telephoning 101, referencing Operation Igloo.

The A283 was subject to temporary closure between Washington Roundabout and the B2135 Horsham Road to facilitate emergency service operations.

Personnel from emergency services continued their presence at the location, with members of the public advised to steer clear of the vicinity where possible.

The Health and Safety Executive and the local council have been notified of the occurrence.

Organisers of the Big Church Festival confirmed that the 2026 edition would not proceed following the incident.

In a communication published on their website, the event’s management expressed profound sorrow regarding the serious occurrence involving a fallen sign that resulted in injuries to at least seven individuals, including one individual who subsequently died.

Their primary concerns were stated as being with those impacted, their relatives and friends, and all those who witnessed the events.
