A sponsored walking event will take place this weekend to collect money for international humanitarian causes.

The annual Tom Paine Sponsored Walk is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, with participants covering eight miles across the South Downs to raise funds for organisations focused on anti-war efforts, medical assistance, and refugee support.

Walkers will meet at 11am in East Brighton Park before proceeding on foot to Southover Grange Gardens in Lewes.

The route is expected to conclude in Lewes at approximately 5pm.

A Brighton-based event spokesperson indicated that residents are eager to respond practically to the humanitarian crises currently receiving widespread coverage.

The collective journey across the Downs represents a demonstration of commitment to human rights principles and an effort to generate urgent financial support for vital medical and refugee services.

Anyone from the surrounding area has been encouraged to participate or contribute to the fundraising initiative.

Proceeds will be shared equally among six selected campaigns, which include Medical Aid for Palestinians, the Lebanon Crisis Appeal, and Care4Calais.

The event derives its name from Thomas Paine, the 18th-century revolutionary author who formerly lived in Lewes.

It commemorates his dedication to international human rights and community cooperation.

Upon arrival at Southover Grange Gardens, participants will take part in a Unity Picnic alongside local community organisations.
