A Christian gathering near Steyning has been terminated prematurely following a fatal accident on Friday.

The Big Church Festival, which was underway in West Sussex, ended its programme immediately after a sign collapsed, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.

A 41-year-old male from Eastbourne was declared dead at the scene on Washington Road.

His family has been notified and is receiving assistance from specialist officers.

Emergency services were summoned to the venue at approximately 3:38pm on Friday afternoon following reports that a large sign had fallen onto attendees.

At least six additional individuals sustained injuries and required hospital treatment.

Organisers confirmed the decision to cancel the remainder of the event, which had been scheduled to continue through the weekend.

A statement released Friday evening expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

Representatives emphasised that supporting those present and ensuring their safe departure from the site remained the primary concern.

Sussex Police confirmed officers attended the location and are investigating circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh offered condolences to the deceased’s relatives and acknowledged the trauma experienced by festival-goers.

The force is requesting anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses relevant footage to make contact, citing Operation Igloo.

The A283 road was sealed off temporarily between Washington Roundabout and the B2135 Horsham Road junction while emergency services operated at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive and local council have been notified.

Festival representatives indicated ongoing cooperation with authorities as inquiries proceed.
