A Surrey father is calling on teenagers and young adults to share information about knife crime following the fatal stabbing of his 17-year-old son in 2023.

Martin Cosser is supporting an initiative launched after the death of his child Charlie, who was killed in Warnham near Horsham last year.

According to Cosser, the loss has created an irreparable void within his family.

He expressed that no parent should endure such devastation.

Cosser believes that among young people, there may be individuals aware that someone is carrying a blade but feel afraid or unsure about the consequences of disclosure.

He stressed that informants can remain nameless and face no personal danger.

A single piece of intelligence could stop another teenager from suffering injury and spare another family the profound grief his own continues to experience.

The initiative is being coordinated by Fearless, the youth division of the charitable organisation Crimestoppers, which provides a platform for young people to report knife crime anonymously.

Research conducted by YouGov on behalf of Crimestoppers revealed that in the South East region, just 22 percent of respondents think young people would alert authorities about knife crime.

This proportion increases to 46 percent when the possibility of anonymous reporting exists.

Across the country, 31 percent of individuals aged 16 to 25 indicated they would be very likely to pass on information to police if they knew someone possessed a knife and believed it could lead to serious injury or fatality.

This compares with 45 percent of adults who gave the same response.

The Fearless.org platform enables people aged 11 to 25 to report criminal activity without providing their name, contact information or any identifying details.

Submissions through the service cannot be tracked and are forwarded to law enforcement agencies without exposing the reporter.

Currently, 35 percent of 16 to 25-year-olds know about the anonymous reporting pathway offered by Crimestoppers, while 55 percent of adults are aware of this option.

The campaign seeks to reduce this disparity and assure young people that a secure method of communication exists.
