Thousands flock to Brighton for August Bank Holiday Mod Weekender

Published on

The Brighton Mod Weekender returns to the Sussex coastline this August Bank Holiday weekend, attracting crowds of scooter enthusiasts, music lovers and vintage collectors to the coastal city for the four-day celebration of mod culture.

Since the inaugural event in 2005, organised by New Untouchables, the gathering has become a permanent fixture on Brighton’s cultural calendar, drawing participants from across Britain and abroad.

Daytime activities centre on Madeira Drive and the seafront, with entertainment staged at established venues including Komedia, Patterns and the Volks.

The North Laine district and waterfront areas take on a festival atmosphere as vintage fashion traders, record dealers and memorabilia specialists set up throughout the weekend.

Brighton has long occupied a central position in mod culture history.

In the early 1960s, the town became nationally known following the confrontations between mods and rockers along its seafront, incidents that would later influence the 1979 film Quadrophenia, with scenes shot around Brighton’s waterfront.

Beyond the distinctive scooters and sharp attire associated with the movement, the event highlights the musical foundations of the scene.

Performances encompass soul, rhythm and blues, ska, beat music and contemporary mod revival acts.

Sunday’s coastal ride-out remains among the most anticipated elements, as dozens of pristine Lambrettas and Vespas traverse the coastline before converging on Brighton.

The gathering has maintained its place in Brighton’s identity for more than six decades.
