A persistent water leak in Medmerry Hill, Higher Bevendean has prompted local residents to demand action after two years of ongoing issues.

The situation has raised concerns about both water wastage and public safety hazards.

The leak produces flowing water that descends the street, creating particularly dangerous conditions during the colder winter season.

Local residents have reported having to take extra precautions when navigating the affected area.

Southern Water has confirmed that a section of its own pipework has been replaced.

However, the utility provider stated that the source of the continuing leak originates from private property, which restricts the measures it can implement.

One resident, identified only as Kate, expressed frustration at the extended duration of the problem.

She described how the pathway transforms into an ice surface during winter, requiring community members to collaborate in breaking up frozen water and applying grit.

Kate noted that residents should not face the risk of injury when simply travelling to catch a bus.

Another local resident, Hannah, highlighted the difficulties faced by those with balance difficulties.

She explained that the conditions require constant attention to footing and expressed concern that elderly or unsteady individuals could suffer serious injuries.

Hannah noted that open-toed footwear becomes impractical in the circumstances.

Brighton and Hove City Council Deputy Leader Jacob Taylor, who represents the Moulsecoomb and Bevendean ward, has joined residents in calling for resolution.

He emphasised the irony of water shortages occurring nationally while significant quantities continue to escape in Bevendean.

Taylor stated that he had contacted Southern Water’s chief executive and insisted upon investigation and repair measures.

He maintained that residents should not be expected to endure the current situation.

A spokesperson for Southern Water acknowledged the legitimacy of concerns raised by customers and local residents regarding visible leaks.

The company stated that multiple issues in the area had been addressed, including replacement of its own pipework and portions of pipework belonging to a nearby property owner.

The spokesperson noted that a remaining leak is situated behind a wall in an inaccessible location and falls under the owner’s responsibility.

Southern Water indicated that communication with the landlord is ongoing to ensure remedial work is carried out.
