A pair of newly installed benches now occupy Fort Road Recreation Ground as part of wider efforts to enhance public areas in Newhaven.
The seating installations pay tribute to the town’s historical significance and natural environment.
The furnishings were developed through a design competition organised jointly by Lewes District Council and Hospitable Environment, a community-based arts group.
The successful submissions were chosen from approximately 100 entries and incorporate imagery inspired by the town’s seafaring legacy, local fauna and coastal character.
Alfie Sinclair, currently in Year Nine at Seahaven Academy, secured one of the winning spots.
He collaborated alongside Diets Verschuren and Caroline Marsland, two artists based in Newhaven, who submitted their entry as a partnership.
Johnny Denis, who serves as cabinet member responsible for arts, culture, tourism and leisure, expressed enthusiasm for the finished pieces.
The councillor noted the remarkable designs created by the three contributors and described them as evidence of the ongoing changes at the recreation ground.
According to the statement, the involvement of community members in shaping the features means the installations reflect local identity and will provide enjoyment for inhabitants and guests for years ahead.
The benches have been positioned within the newly established community garden at the site, providing seating for those wishing to unwind and appreciate the setting.
Fort Road Recreation Ground is presently the focus of a £3.4 million redevelopment, with financing provided through a combination of central government funding and Lewes District Council resources.
Improvements already finished encompass the restoration of Shakespeare Hall, enhancements to the cricket pavilion, installation of a synthetic cricket pitch, upgraded toilet facilities and substantial grounds work.
Ongoing developments feature an outdoor fitness area and a play zone for younger visitors.
A public information board has also been erected, while proposals remain in place for a prospective café and communal facility.
The landscaping strategy incorporates measures intended to encourage wildlife, including the placement of nesting boxes for birds and bats.
Emily O’Brien, cabinet member with oversight of climate, nature and food systems, extended gratitude to the dedicated volunteers who have contributed to the community gardens, particularly during the spell of elevated temperatures.
The councillor highlighted the voluntary efforts invested in establishing and maintaining these areas, noting that such dedication is creating meaningful improvements to the park.
Additional planting schemes for the community garden have been scheduled for the autumn season.
